We will be having a Science Party at the Galactic Headquarters of the Cosmos Research Center in Encinitas from 1 PM to 4 PM on December January 27, 2007.
Dr. Tanya Moreno is a scientist who will be talking about "How Science Can Improve Our Health." After graduating from San Dieguito High School in Encinitas (now San Dieguito Academy), she studied at UCSD, UC Irvine, earned a PhD from California Institute of Technology in Developmental Neurobiology. She did a post doctorate program at Salk Institute, and now does Alzheimer's research at Torrey Pines Therapeutics.
13 year old Alyssa Chan of Olivenhain is a finalist at the Discovery Channel Science Fair. An eighth-grader at The Rhoades School in Encinitas, Alyssa was one of 40 middle school students and the only one from San Diego County to compete in the final round of a national science fair sponsored by the Discovery Channel. She will be talking about her experiences as a Science Fair contestant, and talking about how exciting science has been to her.
Scientist Ella will giving tours of the scale model of the solar system.
Scientist Shaina will be talking about Invasive Species in Encinitas.
We will have science stations available throughout the afternoon, including a telescope which allows us to see sunspots on the sun, and a microscope that will allow us to take pictures of bugs, leaves, butterfly wings, or other objects up to 50 times larger than life!
