Science Party June 21, 2008

We'll be having a Science Party at the Galactic Headquarters of Cosmos Research Center in Encinitas. It will start at 4 PM with a swim party and a pot luck BBQ. Bring a bug, a feather, or something you'd like to see close up with our microscope. We'll also fire up the telescope to see some of the planets and some stars.

The party is open to families with children interested in learning more about science. We will be focusing the presentations towards 7-12 year olds, but children of all ages are welcome.

10-year old Maryn Smith invents "My Very Exciting Magic Carpet Just Sailed Under Nine Palace Elephants"

Now that scientists have shuffled the designations of the planets, the old "My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas" mnemonic for remembering the planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) doesn't work any more. We've demoted Pluto to a minor planet, and added Ceres and Eris.

Field Trip to Owens Valley Radio Telescope Array

PapaTom and Scientist Ella took a tour of the Owens Valley Radio Telescope operated by Cal Tech Dec 27 and 28. It was an exciting trip, seeing the huge telescope from inside as well as from inside the dish after a scary climb up the catwalks 80 feet above ground. The group had fun in the snow the next day in the eastern Sierras. Thanks to Doug Millar for organizing the trip.

Presentation to Orange County Astronomers
